Hi, Orla! What made you consider the Knowadays course?

What were you doing before you started the course?

I have been self-employed for 16 years. I was working as a yoga teacher, and I hope to combine my freelance proofreading career with teaching as soon as the COVID-19 restrictions are eased here in Ireland.

What has been the single best benefit of having done the course?

It has given me access to a new career and additional income at the ripe old age of 53! I love this work and wish I had started it years ago.

Was there anything surprising or particularly challenging in the course for you?

I was pretty poor at formatting! However, the course was so well explained and had such excellent training videos that I eventually got through it.

How has life changed for you as a freelance proofreader?

The flexibility of working freelance is wonderful and allows me ample time for family and hobbies.

When I taught yoga it was mainly in the evenings, which wasn’t much fun on cold, dark winter nights. Now I mainly work for a few hours in the afternoons and have my evenings free to get in my own yoga practice!

Are you making enough money?

I will make enough money when I go back to teaching yoga, as well as proofreading. I also know that the faster I get at editing, the more money I will make.

What do you do when you aren’t proofreading?

Like every proofreader on the planet, I read voraciously! I do lots of yoga and walk in the countryside where I live. I also sing in a community choir and I am a member of a meditation group.

Is there anything else you want to share?

I would recommend freelance proofreading to anyone who loves working with language and making words flow on a page. It is also a great job for independent-minded people who would like to earn extra income and set their own hours.
