(Finding a New Source of Income)
Many aspiring proofreaders who take our Becoming A Proofreader course do so for the guarantee of working with Proofed. Passing the course gives graduates the chance to earn a new source of income through rewarding and flexible work. To hear more about how this works, we spoke to Knowadays graduate Robert.
What were you doing before you started the course?
I was working as a church pastor and theater school administrator.
I’d heard about freelance proofreading through word of mouth. And I began considering the Becoming A Proofreader course because of its price, reviews, and its potential pathway to gaining a new source of income through Proofed.
Was there anything surprising or particularly challenging in the course for you?
Some of the rules about different style guides were surprising. Overall, though, the course was comprehensive, and the practice documents were stretching rather than challenging.
How has your transition to working as a freelance proofreader with Proofed been?
It took a while to have my first onboarding call and then to complete the first 10 short documents in my trial period. But since then there’s been a fairly rapid acceleration despite my limited availability.
The feedback and support from the editors’ team at Proofed have been excellent. And it’s been good to see that there is always the potential to earn more; I’ve just joined one of the teams who edit documents for one of Proofed’s business clients.
Was the course good value for money?
No doubt about it. Freelance proofreading is opening up a new source of income that will allow greater flexibility in my life. Plus, getting paid to be a pedant is personally satisfying, as well as a relief to those around me!
“Freelance proofreading is opening up a new source of income that will allow greater flexibility in my life. Plus, getting paid to be a pedant is personally satisfying, as well as a relief to those around me!“
What do you enjoy most about proofreading?
I love the variety of reading, the satisfaction of returning a corrected document, and the challenge of editing.
Have you been self-employed before? How are you finding it?
Yes, for many years. The Proofed contracting system works well, with the sense of being part of a bigger team.
What do you do when you aren’t proofreading?
I swim in the sea, walk in the hills, garden, or read for fun!
