Vuyo
(Freelance Freedom)
Escaping the nine to five and enjoying complete freelance freedom is a fantasy for many. And it was for Knowadays graduate Vuyo, who was working as an accountant before COVID-19 turned his life upside down. He decided then to pursue his fantasy to live life on his own terms and found our Becoming A Proofreader course. We got in touch with Vuyo to find out more about how heโs been getting on in his new job as a freelance proofreader.
Hi, Vuyo! What made you consider the Knowadays course?
After the 2020 lockdowns turned my life upside down, I started looking for work that I could do online. I was hoping to find something that would allow me to earn money on my own terms, rather than a nine to five.
How has life changed for you as a freelance proofreader?
I’m a free man! Not only do I get to choose my hours, but I can also do this job from anywhere in the world! If I wished, I could pack up and go to a country with an even lower cost of living than mine and live like a king.
Have you been self-employed before? How are you finding it?
Nope. It’s a little intimidating at first because you aren’t 100% sure you’ll make enough money since it’s not a steady paycheck.
But it’s also really liberating because your earning potential and working hours are up to you.
What is your day-to-day routine like now?
I start the day by running errands. After that, I sink my teeth into a document that I choose to work on. Then Iโm free for the rest of the day to do whatever else I want!
Was the course good value for money?
ABSOLUTELY! I’ve earned my money back by now, and I get all the freelance freedom I mentioned above.
What do you enjoy most about proofreading?
I like helping people with important documents. At some point, I noticed that it felt pretty good to polish documents like resumes and cover or recommendation letters because you become part of the process of someone’s success.
Those documents mean a lot to our clients, so it’s nice to help them put their best foot forward.
Do you have a favorite type of document to proofread?
Although cover letters are fulfilling to proofread, legal disputes are the most interesting because it’s like reading a story. There are a lot of “the plot thickens” type moments when proofreading a legal document.
Are you making enough money?
Not just yet, but I believe I will as my word count limit increases and I join more business client teams. The cool part of working with Proofed is that as you get faster, you’re able to earn more. So I’ll be earning more next month than I am now (and so on).
